Jyväskylä

"A small city with a big feel" accurately describes Jyväskylä, located in the lake district of Finland some 270 kilometres north of Helsinki. It has the advantages of a small town being comfortable, compact and safe; and at the same time, it is a bustling modern centre of industry and learning. Out of the 143,000 inhabitants in the urban area almost one fifth are students. The buildings designed by world-famous architect, Alvar Aalto, give their own flavour to the cityscape. Surrounded by lakes, ridges and forests, Jyväskylä is a place of great natural beauty.

Man, nature and technology form the key elements of the multidisciplinary scientific profile of the University of Jyväskylä. Strong growth has continued throughout the 1990's, and today the University, which was established as the first Finnish-language teacher training college in the 1860's, is one of Finland's largest multidisciplinary university with 15.000 students, including 500 international students, and a teaching staff of  753. Bachelor's, Master's, Licentiate and Doctoral degrees are offered within the faculties of Education, Humanities, Information Technology, Mathematics and Science, Social Sciences, Sport and Health Sciences, and the School of Business and Economics. Altogether, there are 120 subject area disciplines to choose from and more than 40 degree programmes leading to a Master's degree. Furthermore, the University is the second biggest provider of adult education in Finland, with a great variety of open university and continuing education programmes.

The University is situated on three campuses: the Main Campus area (Seminaarinmäki) conveniently located in the city centre and the Mattilanniemi and Ylistönrinne Campuses, on opposite shores of Lake Jyväsjärvi, some 10 minutes walk from the Main Campus area.
